Will I become Calvin’s dad? Am I doomed to this life? Because I ran outside at close to freezing and I’ve been told that I need to be able to run in down to -35 Celsius. Will this become something I look forward to?

I live in Texas. It gets hot here. Thank God for treadmills.

I do not miss running in 30 Celsius (86) without the humidex.

Every year I say I’m going to keep riding the bike through winter. Every year I get a bit closer.

Kinja'd!!!

I’m doomed, clearly.

Join me in a winter of suffering.

We need an Oppo outdoor exercise group, so that way we all know that we’re suffering, but the very least exercising. Together .

Every year I get closer to riding my bike to work.

|bike|=work.

In other words... no go. I’ll plan a route, then I’ll iron out kinks, then the smaller kinks in the solution’s kinks, then the kinks in the solution kink solutions...

I just read these not too long ago in the compilation books. That’s me and bike rides, my kids are sure to think I’m weird.

It’s easier in the city, both because there’s better bike infrastructure and because the alternatives are more aggressively bad. When my three choices are subway in rush hour, driving through Boston in rush hour, and the bike, it’s obvious.

My best ride recently was 40k in two hours over the summer. Really wish the trails in Toronto were as good as the ones in Ottawa.

I am in the city, and there’s some pretty good trails along the route... but I’m just too lazy to follow through and give up 45 minutes of sleep.

Which is odd, considering that I’d gladly give up more than that to go skate or play hockey somewhere.

I guess I should have specified a city with terrible traffic...in Boston bicycle is also faster than subway or driving, so I don’t give up any sleep at all and get home quicker.

Kinja'd!!! CB > Shamoononon drives like a farmer

I prefer running in the morning or midday, so I only need to shower once and I get it out of the way. Running at night terrifies me because no one stops for stop signs in this neighbourhood and I don’t want to get hit.

Admittedly I take my daily shower at night before I go to bed :( Yeah, I keep to the sidewalks and have a relatively low traffic neighborhood.

The advantage to being able to run in inclement weather when it’s convenient for you is that you know you’ll be able to run in inclement weather it isn’t convenient for you. As in your life might actually depend on it. Me personally, I’d fall over and die if I had to run more than a half-mile. Snowshoe 25K in an afternoon, sure. Carry a 50lb backpack 50km in one day? Done. But heaven forbid I have to do some kind of cardio...

Speaking of biking trails in Toronto (reading other comments), ever been to Rouge Urban National Park? I’ve always been curious what it’s like there. The concept of an urban national park is very foreign to me.

Fair enough, that’s a good way to plan it, then. Low traffic would be nice. Hell, running on the side of the highway north of Winnipeg felt safer than running in this neighbourhood.

Yup, that’s what I’m training for. Prepare for the worst. Not looking forward to adding a 20 pound weight vest, but I should do that soon.

Never been, and from what I can tell, it’s only “urban” in the sense that it’s in the GTA. It’s about 2k from the closest town, but it’s not like it’s nestled in the heart of the city or something.

I ride my bicycle through the winter but it’s a California winter. Then again, I also rode my bicycle in Buffalo winters. I learned I can ride through deep snow until it reaches the chain. Once it reaches the chain it wipes all the lube off and the bike stops working so good.

I really like riding bikes.

Hate treadmills though. I try to bike at night, when it’s cooler, but I do not trust Houston drivers not to kill me, and the bayou trails seem dangerously isolated at night (for the most part, there is a nice trail along Buffalo Bayou, but it’s too far for me to get to without driving.)

Yes more biking. In the summer I ride 8-10 hrs a week. In the winter I ski 3-4 times a week and gain 10 lbs.

November-February is passable enough that I can run outside without wanting to die. Otherwise I have to wait until 9 p.m. to even think about giving it a go. One other plus of treadmills is I can watch Netflix while I run.

Lol. 2k away from a town is still pretty urban out here.

Are you training with something specific in mind or just keeping in shape? 20lb weight vest makes it sound like there’s something else at play is all.
